Entrance Requirements

This is a compulsory subject.

Approach

English Home Language concentrates on listening, speaking, and writing skills, with an emphasis on insight and practical application. It is very important that English is a learner’s home language for him/her to take it.

Syllabus

The main sub-divisions are literature, poetry, visual literacy, language, writing, and speaking skills. These skills are integrated with presentations and projects that encourage self-study and research. Assessment is done on a continuous basis.

Subject Activities

There are opportunities to enter a variety of writing competitions, such as the Sacee Competition, as well as the Department of Arts competition. We also participate in the Speech and Drama College (SA) – Public Speaking Competition.

Career Possibilities

English Home Language is a prerequisite for any further studies. Careers specifically with English as a major are: journalism, translator, diplomat, radio- and TV presenter, teacher, lecturer, public relations officer, lawyer, as well as any other career where a command of the English language is vital. With English as a primary language, possibilities open for a pupil to study overseas.

We teach mainly communicative skills, with the emphasis on speaking, reading, and writing in context.

Syllabus

The main categories are oral listening, speaking, reading, language structures, comprehension, literature, and poetry. Continuous assessment is done throughout the year.

Subject Activities

Activities include public speaking and orators.

Career Possibilities

English First Additional Language is a prerequisite for any further studies. Careers pertaining to English are: translator, interpreter, editor, copywriter, proofreader, journalist, advertising, radio- or television presenter, writer, communications, teacher, tourist guide, play-wright, actor. A command of English is vital for any job opportunity.
